This journey has it all. With our private boat ramp on-site at our Taumarunui home base, it means that after the morning safety briefing you can jump straight on the river with no driving time. If you want to take an extra day this is no problem at all, but this must be booked and may be extra cost depending on how busy we are.
This is New Zealand's only Great Walk trip that you can canoe. This Whanganui River journey begins at Taumarunui and finishes at Pipiriki. It covers 145 km through exhilarating rapids, breath-taking scenery, gorgeous waterfalls, rock formations to paddle through the middle of, farmland, native bush, and some of the best DoC campsites which you miss if you book a shorter journey.

Thank you for booking a Five Day Journey taken over Four Days with us!
**I have attached more information below that will help you when planning your trip.** Please read this whole email carefully as it is all about your journey and safety.
**Please check with us the morning before your journey to confirm arrival and briefing times, just in case anything has changed for your journey.**
We have a limited amount of canoes with backrests, if you would like to upgrade please send us an email. $60 per boat per trip.
If you have asked for me to help with your DOC campsite booking on the booking form please make sure that you call our office so we can set you up a DOC account and then you can do the booking with your own Log-in and Password.
If you have asked for Private Accommodation, please also email the office to see if we have the availability, check in for Private Accommodation is 5pm or later.
If you have asked for free camping at our base or the private campsite on the last night on the river called Ramanui, you are now booked.
You will be able to access the camping/cabins and your barrels for the next day after 4 pm. When you drive up the driveway you will see a large open shed on the right-hand side of the driveway. In the shed you will find your barrels, your name will be on the top of them, and on the front of the large blue barrel will be all your instructions on where to camp, the toilets, running water, etc. There will also be information on what time you need to be packed and up in the office by the morning you start your journey.
We only take 1 payment per group and you will receive an invoice 2-3 days before your journey for internet banking, if you plan on paying cash on arrival please let us know. We can also charge the credit card you did the deposit with (3% credit card fee).
All Accommodation at Ramanui and on-site with us will need to be paid in cash.
IF YOU ARE NOT STAYING HERE and you are starting either in Ohinepane or Whakahoro, it is very likely you will need to be packed with your barrels back in the shed, car in the car park, and up in the office at 6.30 am on the morning of your journey. If you are starting in Taumarunui you may have time after the briefing to pack your gear.
HOWEVER, we will confirm this the day before your journey when you call or text because this depends on river levels and the weather and things can change so much.
##OUR PRICES INCLUDE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:
**FREEDOM CAMPING AND FREE WIFI**
- Transport to and from the river (1.5-hour drive back to our base);
- 2 Maritime New Zealand Certified Jet Boats on site for backup just in case they are needed (surcharge may apply);
- Canoes, life-jackets, waterproof barrels - 30L and 60L; No Drybags (rats eat them)
- Spare paddle;
- A Barrister Coffee or Tea on your arrival for the briefing;
- Light refreshments including home baking on pick up or return;
- Photograph with your camera or ours; (if you would like this, please don’t hesitate to ask)
- River Maps are provided (but must be returned at the completion of the journey);
- Vehicles can be stored safely at our Farm base at Taumarunui Canoe Hire, Free of Charge;
- TCH provides you with a briefing and instructions before you depart on your journey;
- A rope is provided (each canoe must be tied up at night); and
- All prices include Goods and Service Tax.

##Your Five Day over Four Day Journey: FREE CAMPING & WIFI
Taumarunui to Ohinepane 21.5km 4.5 hours paddling
Ohinepane to Poukaria or 14km 2 hours
Poukaria to **Maharanui** 17km 3 hours
Maharanui to WHAKAHORO OR 4km 1 hour
Whakahoro to Mangapapa 11 km 2.0 hours paddling
Mangapapa to **Ohauora** OR 16 km 3.0 hours
Ohauora to **John Coull Campsite/Hut** or 10.5 km 2 hours
John Coull Hut to Mangawaiiti 9.5 km 2 hours
Mangawaiiti to Mangapurua -Bridge to Nowhere 9 km 1.5 hours
Mangapurua to **Tieke Kainga or Ramanui** 10.5 km 1.5 hours
Tieke Kainga Hut to Ngaporo 12.5 km 3 hours
Ngaporo to Pipiriki 9 km 1.5 hours
Allow yourself roughly 5.5 km an hour paddling time, **depending** on your **level of paddling fitness**. The places highlighted in bold are recommended huts to spend the night.
We recommend that you stay in Taumarunui the night before your Journey starts. This means that you can pack in advance and at your leisure.
We are based on the edge of the river where the one-day and the five-day journeys start. We have an awesome camping area right beside the river and overlooking the river. You are welcome to camp here free if you would like, there is 2 flush toilets, 2 portaloos, and a bush shower at present. We are installing a brand new toilet unit. You would need to use a tent or campervan.
Please note we do not have a communal kitchen. There is a shared BBQ area under cover.
SHARED ACCOMMODATION: We have 3x new bunkrooms. The cost for this will be $35 per person. We will provide a bottom sheet and a pillow. These will have shared facilities.
We have 2 private homestay units for hire this season:
- A lovely self-contained 2 bedroom unit (the bathroom is shared between your group only). This master bedroom has a Leather couch, Super King Pillow top bed with a feather topper on it, a bathroom, separate entrance with fridge, toaster, microwave, and electric jug (not a full kitchen), and an exclusive separate deck area which you can sit and read while you enjoy hearing the river below with great views of the Whanganui river, different view to the photo above. The second Bedroom sleeps 8ppl in it at present.
The Super King bedroom for 2ppl includes your bed being made and towels. The Second Bedroom is a bunk room, you would need to use your own sleeping bags and towels, we provide a bottom sheet, pillow and pillowslip. The minimum cost for the 2 bedroom Unit is $265.00 for up to 5 ppl, after that the cost is $40pp.

With DOC Huts and Campsites being on a **booking basis** now, if something happens along the way and you are booked into a certain HUT or CAMPSITE and you are not going to make it before dark, **PLEASE** use your discretion and stay where it is safe. **NO WARDEN** is going to turn you away when it is nearly dark and you are running late.
Bridge to Nowhere Lodge and Campground (Ramanui) camping $30 per adult $20per youth, a bed in the Cabin $50 per adult $40 per youth) this is a private campsite (not DOC) and is directly across the river from Tieke Campsite. Our very good friends Jo and Mandy own this amazing place and if you would like to stay there, then do the booking with me and payment is made to us for the campsite/huts before you depart to do your journey.
**One requirement of the journey mandated by Maritime Safety is that you have a tent, carry enough food for 2 extra days, and have a small first aid kit including a pocket knife on your journey. Just in case of an emergency, both you and we can rest assured you have something to sleep in that will keep the elements out and that you won’t be getting hungry. If you do not have a tent we have tents that we can hire out. These are Kathmandu great quality tents.**
