Kayak and Paddle Board rentals in Kealakekua Bay are governed by a permitting system through Hawaii State Parks. Kona Boys is fortunate to be one of the vendors who can supply permits for kayaking and paddle boarding in Kealakekua Bay. Before deciding that a rental is right for you, please be aware that there are certain restrictions that apply to rental kayaks and SUPs that do not apply to guided tours. The most impactful of these differences is that you are not allowed to land rental vessels at Ka'awaloa ( the area where Captain Cooks Monument is). This means that snorkeling is done from the kayaks or paddle boards and that the equipment must be kept in your control as you snorkel. The second noteable difference is that rentals for Kealakekua Bay utilize a different launching and landing area. Finally the biggest difference is that with rentals you are responsible for transporting, loading, and unloading all of the equipment. We highly recommend the guided tour as we feel there is a great value in having a guide with you to manage all of the logistics and provide valuable insight into the marine life, culture, and history.
If you decide that the rental is the right option for you, this is a run down of how the program works.
Rentals for Kealakekua Bay are 24 hours and equipment will need to be returned either by 5PM the day of the rental or the following day by the same time as the equipment was rented.
Come to the Kona Boys shop in Kealakekua. We will provide a thorough orientation, review marine life conservation rules, take payment, review your equipment and help you load all of the gear.
After leaving Kona Boys you will drive yourself down to Kealakekua Bay to the county boat ramp located at the end of Kahauloa Rd. Here you will unload your gear and outfit the kayak. Once the car is unloaded, find parking along the side of the road in the adjacent neighborhood. Parking is limited and the community is highly impacted by those visiting the bay, so please be conscientious and make sure to pull all the way off the side of the road and be sure not to partially block any driveways.
After enjoying a beautiful paddle and some snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay, you will return to the area where you launched the vessel, retrieve your car, and load all of the equipment to return to Kona Boys.
**Kayak rentals include:** Paddles, backrests, coolers, lifejackets, and a drybag as well as everything you will need to transport the equipment.
Booking Notes
**Critical Info** Equipment rentals such as kayaks & paddle boards require customer pick-up from our Kealakekua shop, which is 6 miles from the launch point in Kealakekua Bay. After a thorough in-store orientation followed by a demo of how to load your equipment onto your vehicle, renters will transport their equipment to Kealakekua Bay with their own vehicle. Your vehicle does not require a roof rack.
You are headed to the most pristine snorkeling location in the USA and want to make sure you are prepared. Bringing the recommend items will ensure a comfortable day on the water and the best experience possible in Kealakekua Bay.
**What to bring:**
- Snorkel gear is a must. this place is truly amazing and having mask, snorkel and fins makes it all worthwhile.
- We are lucky to have an abundance of sunny days on the Kona Coast, for that reason we highly recommend wearing reef safe sunscreen or a rashguard (surf shirt) that has uv/protection, hats and sunglasses.
- if you have water shoes or sandals it is a good idea to wear them, the area where you launch is rocky and can be slippery.
- if you have a waterproof camera don't forget it.
